# Custom roles and the permission table

_Team & access · 2 min read · Updated 2026-10-05 · https://lanachat.ai/guides/custom-roles/_

A role decides what its members can do. You set roles once on the **Roles** tab of **Team Management**, then give each member one.

## The permission table

Each column is a role, each row a permission. Rows are grouped by area: **Dashboard**, **Creators**, **AI Brain**, **Conversations**, **Vault**, **Scripts**, **Playground**, **Telegram** and **Employees**.

Tick or untick a box: the change applies at once to every member with that role, except members with their own overrides.

> Note: **Owner** always has every permission and cannot be edited. **Manager** and **Chatter** are built in: you can change their permissions but not rename or delete them.

## Create a role

1. Press **New custom role**.
2. Enter a **Name** (for example "Night chatter") and pick a **Colour**.
3. In **Copy permissions from**, choose an existing role to start from, or **No permissions**.
4. Press **Create role**, then adjust its boxes in the table.

> Tip: Rights on conversations, creator profiles and the Vault only apply to the creators assigned to each member.

## Rename or delete a role

Open the role's menu at the top of its column:

- **Rename** changes its name or colour.
- **Delete** removes it. A role still in use can't be deleted: give its members another role first.

## Give a role to a member

Open the member in the **Team** tab and pick the role under **Role**. For a single exception, use **Override for this member**: see [Team Management](https://lanachat.ai/guides/team-and-roles/).

> Note: **View employee directory** lets someone see the whole team. Usually only the Owner role has it.
